Linda May Han Oh’s newest album, Aventurine, combines multiple musical styles to create her own unique sound. With music inspired by jazz, choir, and string quartet, Oh’s skills as a bassist will not disappoint. Oh will perform February 6 at 7:30PM, and ticket prices range from $20-30 each.
Fans of Broadway will be thrilled to learn that Broadway alumni Megan Hilty and Cheyenne Jackson are scheduled for three performances at the Kennedy Center. A Tony nominee, Hilty is known for her roles in musicals such as Wicked and 9 to 5, as well as for her role as Ivy Lynn on the hit TV show Smash. Grammy-nominated Jackson, known for roles in Xanadu and Aida, is also known for his role on TV’s American Horror Story. This Valentine’s Day weekend, the duo will perform songs from Broadway shows, film, and the American songbook. Performances will take place February 13-15. Ticket prices begin at $29 each.
This concert will not only include Dvorák’s Cello Concerto, performed by German cellist Nicolas Altstaedt in his NSO debut, but also other works such as Greig’s Lyric Suite and Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4. This promises to be a night of dramatic and gorgeous music that classical lovers and novices alike will love. The performance is scheduled for February 6, and tickets are $15-99.
Fitz and the Tantrums
If you or your significant other is a fan of this indie-pop band, consider attending their concert this Valentine’s Day. Perhaps best known for their 2016 single “HandClap,” according to the Los Angeles Times music critic Ann Powers, “Fitz and the Tantrums is the kind of band that communicates best in concert.” With a bit of an eighties-pop and a Motown-revival feel, this show won’t be one to miss. The show is scheduled for February 14. Tickets range from $45-75.
Rex Orange County, the stage name of musician Alexander O’Connor, has an undeniably unique yet delightful sound. Described as “a bright blend of hip-hop, jazz, and bedroom pop” by NPR music journalist Zoë Jones, as of early May 2018 Rex Orange County’s most streamed song on Spotify was “Loving Is Easy,” recorded in collaboration with Benny Sings. His performance will take place on February 12, and tickets range from $40.62-80.62.
Mandy Moore is an artist with a laundry list of experience and accolades to her name. She first rose to fame with her 1999 platinum-selling album, So Real, and earned an MTV Movie Award for Breakout Performance as Jamie in the movie adaptation of Nicolas Sparks’ A Walk to Remember. She voices the Disney princess Rapunzel in both the movie Tangled and the Disney Channel show Tangled: The Series. Since 2016 she has starred as the family matriarch Rebecca Pearson on NBC’s This Is Us. Her music could be described as charming singer-songwriter, and her voice is clear and sweet. She will perform at the Warner Theatre March 26, and ticket prices range from $40.50-188.
Perhaps best known for their hit “I Want You to Want Me,” Cheap Trick will perform on February 16 at the Warner Theatre. Fans of the group know its musical style well, which could be described as “rock” and “power pop.” Tickets range from $48-299.
