With the new year here, many people are beginning to compile lists of their New Year’s resolutions. A good portion of those people will add something involving improving their health and fitness to their lists. If you have no idea of what to do to accomplish your health and fitness goals, here are a few free or cheap programs to help you accomplish them this year.

Dance Fitness

When: Every first Saturday of the month through March 2020

Where: The Kennedy Center, 2700 F St NW

Admission: $10

Get your exercise and learn to dance better with this affordable program! Each month a different type of dance will be featured. All levels of experience and ability are welcome.

Intro to Group Strength Training

When: Every Sunday 9:15-10:00 AM

Where: SWEAT DC, 3232 Georgia Ave NW

Admission: Free, but spaces are limited, so RSVP early!

This 45-minute program includes a free week pass to SWEAT DC upon completion. More than that, it also involves explanations as to why strength training is important for both mental and physical health. Safety measures are covered, too; you will be instructed on how to move safely throughout strength training exercises and will then complete a modified workout routine.

Fitbit Local New Year Detox

When: Sunday, January 5, 2020 10:30-11:30 AM

Where: Hook Hall, 3400 Georgia Ave NW

Admission: Free

This bodyweight bootcamp and yoga flow set will be set to music spun by a live DJ. Fitbit ownership is not required, but a yoga mat, towel, and government-issued ID are. At the end of the workout, one lucky attendee will win a Fitbit, and the first fifty people will receive a free drink. There will also be coconut water provided to keep everyone hydrated.

No matter what shape you’re in or how far you think you have to go, the best thing to do is to get started. Getting the ball rolling is the most important step in achieving any goal. Classes add accountability, as well as provide an opportunity to socialize. Whether you choose to take one of these classes, join a gym, or just exercise at home, we know you’ll be successful.
